Our Beginner DSLR workshop will be held on March 30th. I am so very excited to share some of my knowledge with you and to get you on the right track to taking better everyday photos! All the information for class is below including what topics will be covered. There are 15 spots available and are first come first serve.

Beginner DSLR Workshop

Taught by Nena Metcalf of Nena Metcalf Photography

This workshop (lasting about 2 1/2 hours) is designed to get you and your DSLR more acquainted in a fun and relaxing atmosphere!

Did you buy a DSLR knowing that you were on the right track to getting better pictures? Are you now frustrated that they don't look much different than your point and shoot? This workshop will help you learn to use the tools that you have to better your photographs!

This workshop will teach:

How to shoot in manual mode (lets get off auto!!)

How to get proper exposure for your images (how bright or dark they are)

How to "blur the background" or achieve bokeh

How to find the best lighting for portraits without using your flash

How to get "sharp" pictures and ditch those blurry out of focus shots

How to take better shots of your own children

This workshop is not for photographers or advanced DSLR users, but is geared towards parents who want to take better everyday portraits of their children.

Please bring your camera manual with you to the workshop and become familiar with it before the workshop. Know where your settings are and how to change them. I am a Canon shooter but the class is open to those with other DSLRs.

Workshop is limited to 15 participants so we can sit and chat and have plenty of time for questions.

Help a Katy Family for Christmas

We are so fortunate to live in a community that supports and reaches out to those who can use a helping hand, big or small. A few days after moving to Katy, a new neighbor came down the street, abandoning his own yard work to help my husband dig out a very stubborn large tree. Since then we have seen nothing less than the fabulous, charitable families we live amongst who are always willing to help others.

If you were around a few months ago when I announced what Christmas would hold for Nena Metcalf Photography, you may have already read a bit about our Presents for Pictures campaign. However, now that we are closer to the big day, I would like to, once again, extend an invitation to you all to help a Katy family.

My husband and I contacted Houston Childrens Charity months ago and asked to be assigned a family that could use some extra help this year. Because our reach would be so great through my wonderful clients and friends, we wanted a bigger family. The sweet family we are assigned to consist of a hard working single mom and her four children. We are still in need of gifts, particularly for the two older children and I would like to invite all of those who can, to donate one or a few items to this family.

I love referrals, like love love them. And why wouldn't I? Its like someone saying "You are SO awesome, we enjoyed our time with you so much, we are going to trust you to do a great job with our friends and family's portraits as well!" Heck yeah!

So that is where this beautiful couple came in, a referral from another fab couple (you remember Alli and Matt, right?). Anne and I were struggling a bit to get our schedules to line up so she trused her fabulous friends and made the leap of faith - yes that is right, booking me for her wedding via email. Baby Love {Baby Photographer in Katy, TX}

I am a mom to three Ps, ages 6, 3 and 11 months.... 11 months... it seems like just yesterday I was in the hospital waiting for my c-section. I simply can not believe that my sweet little guy, my last baby, is almost one.

This nostalgia was coupled a bit with the guilt that I have been feeling for not taking enough pictures of my own kids. My clients are getting all my time and photoshop attention and my own family's memories are seeming to take the back seat. So, I grabbed my camera and spent about 15-30 minutes this weekend with each of my kids, one on one, photographing them without any other interruptions. This may seem like its not a big deal, but with Daddy away playing with the big boys, I was at home, unassisted.

I think photographing your baby in his diaper is cute... for a small window of time. I wanted to take advantage of that before his rolls and drooly smiles are all gone. Yes, I'm being sappy, but hes my baby, and hes just so stinking cute. So anyway - here he is! P3 :) 11 months.

Beads of Courage {Charity Event Photographer in Katy, TX}

Beads of Courage is a wonderful program helping sponser children with Cancer. I was asked by a friend if I would be interseted in working with this organization of a local event they were holding. This included the actual event and also photographing a local family whos lives have been impacted by childhood Cancer (blog post coming soon).

For those of you who were around in the early days of my business, in the Fall of 2009, you are probably aware that my husband, then 29 was diagnosed with Cancer. While he has been having clean scans for almost two years now, it was a hard road that I don't wish on anyone. Much less a child.

The event was a success, it was beautiful, the women, the jewelry they were making, and of course the lives they were impacting through their donations. I was so thankful to be a part of this program and to document it so that others too, may share.

The Fabulous B Family {Family Photographer in Katy, TX}

Meet the B Family. Aren't they gorgeous??? They are also my fabulous neighbors. Their little miss, and mine are BFFs and spend their warm afternoons drawing sidewalk chalk in our cul de sac.

Mom of the B family had a fairly common background when it comes to family photography. They had been to the local chains, done the black tops and jeans and were ready for something fresh and new. We chatted about her style, the colors that inspire her and we came up with a plan. I assured her, during our clothing consultation (did you know I do those???) like I do all of my clients, that layering, coordinating and dressing to your own personal style trumps matching buttondowns, draped cardigans and khakis anyday. And was I right? Oh yeah! Mom took my advice and ran with it and came up with these beautiful outfits, two each, that flow seamlessly together.

Sara + Kris {Wedding Photographer in Katy, TX}

But again... better late than never :) Ms. Sara is from a small town outside of Dallas so off we went, to her hometown for their small cottage chic wedding. I loved it! So you wouldn't know it by looking at this adorable little girl, but she gave me a bit of trouble when she came into the studio. This led to me having to schedule my first ever reshoot....ever. This the thing that being a mom has prepared me for in this business - we can schedule around their naps, have a nice easy morning, but sometimes - they just DON'T want any part of this picture taking thing!

So, we rescheduled and headed outdoors for the second session. She very much so preferred the outdoors and we were able to have a great session!!

I love how these little ones keep me on my toes!

Keeping the memories alive {Katy, TX Family Photographer}

This morning I found myself running a little behind while I was trying to get myself and my kiddos ready for the day. Well... maybe not so much running behind .. more like scrambling because two of my three kiddos were awake before I had a chance to take a shower. Not unlike most days...

So while one is getting ready for school, I popped on the back up babysitter (Dora...anyone??) for my three year old and head to my room. In about two seconds my 6 year old comes plowing into the bathroom "Does this mean that I'm in charge?" It was like an episode of Phineas and Ferb (if you aren't or haven't been a mom of a preschooler/elementary goer, please excuse the reference), my daughter, not even tall enough to ride all the rides at Disney World is begging me to be given such an adult-esque responsibility.

WHY?

What is it about our beautiful children wanting to grow up way too fast? Is lounging around on lazy Saturday mornings watching TV or warm Summer evenings spent playing outside with friends not quite good enough? Why on earth would they want more?

Can they PLEASE stop growing up?

This weekend we headed out to have our own family pictures taken. My husband tries to keep a good attitude but when it comes down to it, the twice annual family pictures (he feels) are a bit much. And maybe they are.... maybe they aren't. But, I want to remember my kids from the days when they aren't locked in their rooms gabbing on their cell phones or asking me to borrow the car. (Or, perhaps if yours are already at that point, you want to remember them now, before you turn around one day surrounded by grand-children.) Is that too much to ask?

I think not....

Personally, I don't feel that there is a wrong time to have family pictures taken. Everyday brings something new and maybe I'm selfish but, I want to remember it all.

I love trying new things!! I really wanted to do a newborn session outside. When I started thinking about it - it was February. Not really condusive for bringing a brand new baby outside - even in Houston! So I patiently waited for baby Harlow to come around when the weather got nicer. It was fun trotting around Harlow's grandparents country home!

If you have new ideas or locations, don't be afraid to bring them up! I (or your local photographer) are almost always up for the challenge of something new!

Its amazing the bond I have formed with them, I truly think of Priscilla and Ryon as great friends of mine.

Domestic Divas of Fort Bend County: Party like a Rockstar!

So excited to introduce our next guest blogger! Kim is a great friend of mine and I personally have used her services for my son's 3rd birthday this summer - it was FABULOUS!

Hi! I’m Kim over from Craftily Yours. I craft, sew, create, party plan, you name it, I do it! I have known Nena for roughly two years and most of the pictures hanging in my house are courtesy of her. When she asked for volunteer guest bloggers on kid related topics, I jumped at the chance. While I have a kid, a three-year-old, I am pretty much still a child at heart myself. I thought maybe a kids in the kitchen post, but then Nena gave me this wonderful idea. It could possibly help you for years to come, no really, it could!

What is a vital part of the childhood experience? Why parties of course. I recently did a post on my blog where I lamented that there really needs to be a twelve step program for this. Parties and children parties in particular are so much fun to plan. You get to choose a theme, have crazy games, funky food, it’s a blast really. You get to do everything you didn’t think of when you were a kid.

There is a lot to planning a party. Depending on how grand you make it, it can be from a few hours of preparation to weeks, or in my case, sometimes months. The best way to tackle this is just dive in.

First, decide how big or little. Now I’m not just talking people, but that is handy to know too. Decide your budget. This will be the determining factor in how many people, what you can do, and where you can do it.

Choose your day and time. This is all about age and preference. There is nothing set in stone. Don’t schedule the party during your child’s naptime thinking you can put them down earlier or later. It never turns out that way. If choosing to throw a party that starts at noon, however, please do provide something edible. It can as easy as a fruit or veggie tray.

Choose your location, if having it somewhere other than your home, you may need to be flexible on date and time. As for invitees, the rule of thumb is one more than your child’s age. Example if turning 1, invite one other child. I for one don’t like this rule. Don’t overload your space but if budget allows, the more the merrier I say.

*If having it at a bounce place or such, a lot of the times decorations and paper goods are included, so if time pressed this is an awesome alternative.

Pick out a theme. My suggestion is if the child is old enough ask them. They are always full of ideas and most of the time they are surprisingly good. Don’t scoff if the idea is not ideal, say they pick out bacon! There are totally cute party ideas out there for bacon! If not, pick something you like.

Scour the internet. Etsy, Kara’s Party Ideas, and The Party Dress are great sites to start with. You can pretty much Google whatever your party theme is and hit the jackpot. While be bombarded with all these ideas, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Honestly, your child won’t notice if there are five different types of stars hanging from the ceiling, all they see is stars. My hardest task is reigning in creativity. A child will remember two to three really cool things about their party a lot more than 15 crammed in.

Next, now that you have your budget, theme, date, time and location set. You have sorted ideas and have made your list. Take action. Invites need to be in the mail no later than two weeks prior to the party but no earlier than four weeks. You want to find the happy medium of giving people a heads up but not so long as they forget there is a party. If you are throwing this together last minute, do call to invite. Sending evites is acceptable now days; I would refrain from doing this for anything other than a birthday party though.

Now there are a couple items that need to be checked through. Decide if you’re serving food and if you are, are you preparing it. If you’re preparing it and your party is not at home think about access to water, heat, and cold storage. If it’s in your budget to get someone else to do it, do it. Preparing food, decorating, hosting the party is a tremendous amount to take on and still enjoy the party. If you don’t have a caterer in the budget, think about party trays from restaurants, Chik-fil-a is a favorite of mine or grocery stores deli trays work great. If you still want the homemade feel, make something that you can make ahead of time, this means more than the day before too. I am so guilty of this!

Decide on your cake. I go for cupcakes at children’s parties. They are so much easier to pass out then it is to cut a cake. If you have to have a cake, go for it, but maybe have something else there to distract while it is being handed out.

Figure out your game plan. I usually write down a timeline. This seems silly but it saves you from the umm, what do I do next panic. If having the party at home or a park without a playground, have games or a craft or both planned. Crafts are good because they can act as party favors too! Sometimes time flies, sometime it drags, have a back up game as well.

Favors are the most fun to put together in my opinion. They leave the lasting impression of the event and are a tangible way of saying thank you for attending. These can be as simple as candy and matching goodies or to elaborate gift bags filled to the brim.

Prepare as much as physically possible before the party. You will also want help to decorate and set up the party. This can be Dad, Grandma, a friend, any one. Have an idea of where you want what, but be prepared to change it if it messes with the flow of the party.

Be budget conscious. Keep visible track of what you are spending. You want the event to be fantastic, but if you’re worried about the credit card bill you will receive next month it won’t be fun for you and you will be stressed before the party even starts. Like I said above, your child will remember only a few of the decorations, games, and food that you spent so much time and money laboring on, you don’t have to do everything for one party.

*To help be budget conscious, look around your house. See what can be dual purpose. If you remember a really cool cake plate that friend had, ask if you can borrow it.

Most importantly be present for your child. This is their day and they will only turn this age once. Take lots and lots of pictures. These will be the best memories. Consider getting someone else to do this for you so you will be in some of them.

Remember that we are of the mindset that bigger is better. This is not always true for birthdays. Some of the most memorable and fun parties are often the most simplistic. This gives you time to focus on a few things and make them great.

Domestic Divas of Fort Bend County: Burried Under my Kid's Clothes!

I am so excited to start this segment of our blog!! Over the next few months we will learn tips, inside information and more from amazing local moms. Lets welcome our first guest blogger - Amanda Vadon of Rhea Lana.

Clothing, specifically kids clothing can be a challenge. They go through a lot and they outgrow them very quick at times. Also sometimes they are just so small that when put away in drawers, closets, & stuffed in baskets, here and there etc, may not seem like you have a lot, until its laundry day and you are swimming in kids stuff, you may even find that there aren’t enough hangers for everything you want to hang when it's time to put it all away.

It is good to have a specific laundry routine, and also periodically set aside time for organization and reorganization, pairing, and sorting what you have and deciding what to keep and what goes.

A combination of information should be used when eliminating some outfits from your child's wardrobe.

-look around and see how much space you have for clothing storage, this will play a big factor especially if your space is limited (and this doesn't mean you need to go buy more storage). Also on the other hand, just because you have tons of storage space, doesn't mean you should use all of it.

-Figure out what it is that you do during each week. This can vary from season to season which is why you should sort each season, or at least 2 times per year (in addition to a little here and there). How often do you dress up? Is church your only weekly activity requiring nicer clothes? Then instead of 10 dresses maybe have 5 or less. If your child wears a uniform to school, or to special activities, decide how many you need by how many days they attend. Do you go out a lot, or stay home? Our at home clothes and going out clothes are pretty much interchangeable for us, but we do have special outfits just for outside play, and other messy play activities.

-Pull out of season, and outgrown, and stained pieces. This should be really easy, especially if you are doing this at the very beginning, or very end or a particular season.

Stained clothing should also be pulled, and a couple of these pieces kept ONLY IF your child will wear them while painting projects, or other activities where there are sure to

be more staining happening.

-Too attached to the clothing and want to keep them all? I am sentimental about particular items of my children’s clothing, I do however say that I can only keep X amount of "special" items, and then stick to it. I sometimes need help with this and usually watching an episode of the show Hoarders usually will solve that problem! You don't need the item to keep the memory. Rid yourself of the clutter, and make room for the NOW and the new memories to be made!

-Decide what to do with the pulled clothing. Think about your options and then make a plan to do it! Having a plan in place will hold you accountable to following through this task! Stained items may be able to get clean (hoping I get to do future guest post on laundry stains!!), if not these could be used as rags for washing cars etc, even charities prefer not to have stained clothing. Some options for the pulled clothing in good condition, include charity donation, handing them down, a garage sale, or for the really good items a consignment shop or sale. Consignment sales are great because they allow you to ask more than just the pennies you would be able to get at a garage sale. I just so happen to know of a great consignment sale, Rhea Lana's. Consigning is a great motivator to get your items gone and make a little money back, offer good discounted clothing to you and other families. heck out our links below!

Last but not least, do not get stressed, or overwhelmed. Make sure you start with enough time, and take your time sorting and organizing, you do not have to rush, this is not a race. Spread it over a few days and de-clutter, and de-stress your life.

A gallery wrapped what?? {Photographer in Katy, TX}

As my clients browse my beautifully designed portrait catalog for the first time (Thanks Manda!), I just know some of them get this look like "ehhh... what IS that??" So, over the next few weeks I am going to take some time to explain these fancy schamcy items so that everyone can be in the know!

First up - my absolutly favorite product - Gallery Wrapped Canvases! If you have been to my house for a newborn session or a view&choose session, this is quite obvious. They are EVERYWHERE (just counted 20 in my house - not including the 8 I have in my office that are going to clients this week). Mixed with frames, large collages, hanging solo, these guys are all over the place. And I love it!

Canvases stand the test of time - their design is classic and timeless, and I have found (we won't say exactly how) that they are quite durable!

Canvases can be great for any type of session, family, newborn, wedding etc. There really isn't anything I wouldn't print on them.

So I've invested in digital files - now what?

Well besides the obvious gift prints and wall portraits that you plan to order (and don't try to hide it ... we all know that your well laid out plans of grandeur to print a larger than life portrait collage of your three kiddos got sidetracked by life, didn't it? Your cd's still in the drawer in your desk.) We wonder what to do with these fabulous pictures that we just love so much. Well here are some fun ideas.

We are heading into the time of year when family gatherings around the dining room table and gifts to grandma are a plenty. Why not take that trusty disk of pictures and let it do some work for you!

Exclusive Digital Sessions just for the Holidays {Katy, TX Family Photographer}

While our regularly scheduled sessions spots disappeared faster than I could have anticipated, I still have clients emailing me looking for time for their family portraits. And well, I hate dissapointing people!

So, I have decided to add a limited amount of "Digital Sessions" that can be scheduled on select days between Oct 1 and Dec 17th. Yes, BUT this is the difference - these sessions will include those coveted high resolution files from our session. (retail price $1200). The average family session will yield 25-30 images with print release which will be available to download online 2 weeks after the session. So.. if you have been doing your math you will see that this package is worth a retail price of $1375.

I bet you I can count at least a dozen times where I have stated here that I am the world's worst blogger and that I vow to do better... maybe even a baker's dozen. Truth be told, I am a terrible terrible writer, and an even worse comedian and sometimes I would rather just let the pictures speak for themselves. Thus, my tendency to lean towards facebook. But... I just feel that there is more to a story than the snipits you get from the 4-5 pictures I post here, so here I go again, jumping on this bloggin' bandwagon and hope to be able to offer you more than just some eye-candy :)

This is the beautiful Amy and her dashing husband Trey. They are so darn cute together, don't you agree? We got to work together before at their engagement session, where Trey serenaded Amy on the guitar and broke his firm no PDA rule.

Their wedding was beautiful, and I know I say this a lot, but if I were to have my wedding all over again, there are lots of details from Amy and Trey's day that I would totally steal!

I'm always on the look out for new places to shoot. Old barns, open fields, trails through the forest.... the list goes on. This is one thing that I always seem to want. New locations are inspiring and challenging, but always rewarding. I have clients turn me on to different spots all the time, but I just always want more! So... this is where you come in...

I am holding a contest to win an hour long, custom planned, fantabulous family session! No you don't have to get anyone to "like" my page (although it is always welcomed ;) ), you don't have to stand on your head and count to ten, and you also don't have to (insert obnoxious requirement here). What you do have to have is a dreamy location suggestion. Somewhere that I can take my fantastic clients to take their portraits. There are a few rules, but I promise it will be painless.

1. The location must be public or I must have expressed written permission from the owner.

Every year around this time I start getting excited at the prospect of below 100° weather and the start of Fall and Winter. While I always miss the Michigan snow, the Christmas spirit is always alive and well in the Metcalf home. More often than not, that very spirit leads me to go on these amazing shopping expeditions widening the array of my children's trinkets and treasures. And again, more often than not, the day following Christmas I realize that once again, instead of spoiling my beautiful children by giving them things they do need, I should have, instead, worked on solidifying the spirit of giving, not only with my children, but also in myself.

This year, I have decided to make some Christmas changes. The first thing on my list involves taking this beautiful business of mine, that my fabulous clients have helped me grow and use it to help and inspire others. With that in mind, and with the help of my wonderful husband, I have created "Pictures for Presents" for the 2011 Holiday season at NMP.

There are so many less fortunate families in the Houston area. And this year, I hope, that with your help, we can brighten the lives of at least one.

So - that brings me to what "Pictures for Presents" actually is! This year, for the months of October, November and December, for any session, you may "pay" for your pictures by bringing in and donating gifts for this less fortunate Houstonian family. I can't think of a better way to help those in need and to also take care of my clients! Also, in addition to giving this deserving family a wonderful Christmas with the help of my clients, I too will be donating a family session complete with portraits to help them celebrate the holidays.

Here are the details:

Who is she? Why Katelyn Jolley of course! I have known Katelyn for a long long time and although we lived in Texas when she was named CMT's Music City Madness 2, I still heard about it! Its just TOO HOT for the Holidays! {Limited Edition Sessions in Katy, TX}

Clients who know me and fans who follow me on facebook know that though I love donating sessions to a great cause, I am not a photographer who offers sales for regular sessions. Apart from the mini sessions I offered last year (which will not be offered this year) things are priced the way they are priced. Custom portraiture is an investment and my fabulous clients understand that. However, this year I have decided to offer a limited edition package for those who wish to beat the rush for Christmas portraits and cards. Its our "Too Hot for the Holidays" sessions!

Taking place on a beautiful ranch near Katy, these full family session packages will be filled with country flair with wide open fields, fences, and beautiful horses. Open for your immediate family, we will photograph not only great group portraits but also a wide variety including individuals of the children. The package will include a session up to 45 minutes on the ranch as well as 4 gift prints (size 8x10 and smaller), 2 wall mounted portraits up to a 16x24 and 50 Christmas cards. The value of this session package is $815 but we are offering a limited number of spots for $575.

There are only nine spots available for these sessions. Three each the morning of July 9th, 16th and August 6th.

Like I mentioned, mini sessions will not be offered this year for Christmas. I will also be closed the entire month of December to celebrate my little man's first birthday and to spend the holidays with my family. I met Alex August 2005 - I remember because it was 3 weeks after my daughter Peyton was born that I started coaching at Holly High School. Alex was in 7th grade and was just started cheerleading. I was so very excited when her mom scheduled me for her senior pictures while I was in Michigan last month. I can't believe how grown up she is! It doesn't seem like that much time has passed since we lived in Michigan but it has. Its amazing how time just flies by.

Anyway, we had a great time shooting in downtown Clarkston. I love going to brand new places!

Auction for a Session to help a family in need! {Custom portrait photographer in Houston, TX}

Hello all!!

As many of you know, Houston is not my home. I was born and raised in the frigid tundra know as Michigan! (Dang I love Houston's weather!!!) Anyway, most of my family still resides there, along with my cousin Renee, her 30 year old husband Tony, their 13 year old daughter Alex and 11 year old son Nick. In 2008 Tony got a virus that attacked his heart and caused congestive heart failure that turned into viral cardio myopathy. With proper medication and a strict diet he was able to keep it controlled. In December, Tony's cardiologist took him off of his medicine and in February he got sick again and this time it spiraled out of control. At this point, his heart function was down to 40%. In March, Tony was admitted to the hospital after throwing up blood and they discovered a blood clot in his lung and three of them in his heart. His heart function had dropped to 15% and he was transferred to U of M Ann Arbor, where they were able to stabilize him - unfortunately though, U of M doesn't accept their insurance. They also knew that he wasn't going able to have a heart transplant that he desperately needed because of the clots. At that time and sent him home to recover and maintain meds for 6 months to allow the embolism to dissipate. While at home, his daughter, Alex found him on the floor - he'd had a clot break loose and had a heart attack. So after only two days home, he was back in the hospital. Since then his heart function is down to 8% and his other organs are shutting down to provide enough blood for this heart.

He has just had pumps placed in to help the flow of blood through out his body. His heart has undergone a terrible amount of stress and shows major signs of damage. Since U of M wouldn't accept their insurance to cover the surgeries necessary - they flew him to Cleveland, OH and my cousin is spending her time traveling back and forth while her children stay with family.

This has put an incredible strain on them emotionally and financially. Renee has taken all of her vacation and PTO while caring for Tony, is paying for their insurance premiums out of pocket and has been staying in her car because there is no chair or extra bed in Tony's room. Tony is also unlikely to work again as the surgeries and strain on his heart has put such strict restrictions on his level of activity. No swimming, boating, camping, lifting over 20 lbs, etc. He told Renee this week that his biggest concern is not being able to walk their daughter Alex down the aisle.

To help ease the stress of their financial burdens, I am auctioning off a custom one hour photography session complete with high resolution digital images with print release (value $1375). This session can be used for family, senior, newborn or child portraits. It is available for Houston clients as well as those in Michigan who will be available for portraits the on the evening of August 19th. We are in constant need of models to photograph for the boutiques that we work with! Ranging from hair pieces, to photography props we need beautiful (and cooperative) people to come help us out!! If you or your child love having their portrait taken - this will be great fun for us both!

If you or your child would like to be included in our database, please fill out the form below. There is no fee to be listed as one of our models. but, you must have a Nena Metcalf Photography portrait on file - if you haven't been photographed by us in the past 3 months, you will need to attend our model round up event. The event will consist of a 10-15 minute mini session and you will get to choose your favorite high resolution file with print release. The cost for the event is $45.

Our model files are open to everyone!! Babies, children, teens and adults and models will be selected by the boutique owners. While my daughter sure is cute toting around that camera - I fear that she won't be quite tall enough to help me hold a reflector - so alas - I have to look for someone else :)

I have debated on whether or not hiring an intern is what I needed exactly. I had an intern last year and she was great! My business has changed a lot since then and while before I was needing help in the office, I am now seeking someone to help on location, during my sessions.

I am very excited to bring someone in to work with me during sessions. This will include assisting with lighting, helping transport props and gear, posing clients, and may include doing the occasional funny dance to make a child laugh :)

Our 90 minute class is designed to get you and your DSLR more acquainted in a fun and relaxing atmosphere!

Did you buy a DSLR knowing that you were on the right track to getting better pictures? Are you now frustrated that they don't look much different than your point and shoot? This workshop will help you learn to use the tools that you have to better your photographs!

This workshop will teach:

How to shoot in manual mode (lets get off auto!!)

How to get proper exposure for your images (how bright or dark they are)

How to "blur the background" or achieve bokeh

How to find the best lighting for portraits without using your flash

How to get "sharp" pictures and ditch those blurry out of focus shots

How to take better shots of your own children

This workshop is not for photographers or advanced DSLR users, it is geared towards parents who want to take better everyday portraits of their children.

Please bring your camera manual with you to the workshop and browse it before coming (although it is recommended that you read it from cover to cover) . I am a Canon shooter but the class is open to those with other DSLRs, again, just make sure to bring your manual.

How to hang your portraits! {Custom Wedding Photographer in Houston, TX}

Some of you who have been with NMP since the beginning may have noticed changes in the products that I recommend. My new wedding packages include canvas gallery wraps and I always emphasize that art is meant to be enjoyed by being displayed, not to be on a cd and tossed into a drawer. Recently I have been taking my own advice and have purchased several large canvases to display in my own home, and I couldn't be more happy with my decision.

While we have just moved, and my house unfortunately isn't prepared for photographing, Adam of Adam Hommerding Photography was willing to share this beautiful image of art with me. Don't you just love how seamlessly your portraits can be displayed, and how timeless this is. I hope to produce a similar display from my own family session I have scheduled for June this year with my friend Lindsay.

Fundraiser for Maisie Waugh

A few days ago I was contacted by a client. She had written to tell me that her beautiful 3 year old daughter Maisie had passed away two days prior. While playing in the backyard she had made her way into her neighbor's yard and into their pool.

The Waugh family, originally from Scotland, has lived in Katy for a few years. They have three other children, a daughter, and two sons (one of which has been battling Leukemia) and are great members of our community. I feel that supporting others in our area when they need it is what makes a city, like Katy, great!

Burying your child has to be one of the single most difficult things someone can do. And, although there are so many other trying things that go along with it, financial burdens are also a big part of it. As such, I am asking for your help - to help ease a bit of the pain they are going through. First - how gorgeous are K + B? I can hardly stand it, its like they stepped out of a magazine! And not only are they easy on the eyes, they are super sweet! And get this - they met on an airplane! Brandon had been bumped from a previous flight, and Kelly was flying with her adorable daughter G and the airline had split up their seats, not cool when your daughter is only 4! So a nice gentleman offered to switch seats with Kelly allowing her and her daughter to sit next to each other...which also landed them right next to Brandon! The rest, as they say, is history :)

I met Amy and her mother at Starbucks a few months ago to chat about their wedding. She had been referred to me by a few friends and booked me on the spot, and I am so glad she did. Amy and Trey are absolutely adorable! They chose one of the more popular engagement spot of Downtown Richmond, and we totally lucked out - it was unseasonably warm for January (YES it gets cold here too!!) so we were able to have fun and play without freezing.

Whats in my bag? {Houston Area Wedding Photographer}

"What kind of camera do you use?" I get asked that question often.... emails from hobbyists and new photogs, wedding guests who stop and chat, and from clients. Now before I go and share what my go to gear is, let me say that I firmly believe that the most important thing is to learn how to use the camera and equipment that you have. Sure you can go drop $10,000 on a new camera and some great glass, but if you haven't a clue how to turn the camera off that little green auto box, then it is really pointless.

Now lets get to it...

First, I am going to start with cameras. This is my main squeeze (apart from Dave of course!) my Canon (yeah baby!) 5d mark ii. I got this camera early 2010 and I absolutely love it! This was my third upgrade since starting out and I have a feeling this guy and I are going to be together for a while :)

Next comes my trusty back up boyfriend the Canon 50d. This poor guy gets neglected quite often and rarly gets used :( Before using him to shoot the 5dmkii above, he hadn't been used in several months! Luckily, we still click when he gets pulled out (click...lol) and I really should use the 50d more often. It's a fantastic camera, and sometimes I forget that!

"Why are your cameras so tall?" "Tall??" Oh, yes, that would be the battery grip. I am super paranoid about having my batteries die at the absolute worst time, so I break my neck (literally) carrying around the extra weight to ensure that just won't happen! The grip on the bottom holds two batteries instead of one.

Now on to the glass..... This is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I love it, I've had it for some time and have recommended it to several others who love theirs as well! This is very similar to the Canon 24-70 2.8, and some say it shoots better. I've compared the lenses side by side and didn't notice any difference so I stuck with this lens which retails about $900 less than its Canon counterpart. Score!
This is the newest dude to join the gang. The Canon 50mm f/1.2L. Isn't he beautiful?? I know I know... get a room. Anyway, I am still getting acquainted with this lens but love it already! It creates such a creamy background to the images that is enough to make any camera enthusiast drool! I have a feeling this lens won't be leaving Mr. Mark any time soon.And the big guns. The Canon 70-200 f/2.8L. I love this lens. It is perfect for shooting ceremonies, I can get up close and personal without being all up in the bride/groom's faces. It too creates beautiful images. I do see people out and about shooting portraits with this lens, and I do on occasion, but I typically save it for ceremonies and sometimes receptions. IMO, this is a wedding photog must have.

I thought I would tag these along too. I rarely use flash except for wedding receptions, but wanted to give them their time in the spotlight too!
I have gone through multiple lenses since I started my trek into photography. Honestly, it was not the smartest move. Instead of buying cheap lenses, then selling them to upgrade, I should have just saved up and bought the better glass to begin with. So, that is my suggestion, grab a jar, save your pennies and go straight to the good glass.

Whats next on my list? Well, the list is never ending. I think I am pretty content for now, but maybe the 85mm will be next :) Who knows!

We are looking for one family, up to 3 children, and up to 2 newborns (from different families) for this campaign. The perfect candidate would be fun, stylish, outgoing, energetic and open to new ideas.

What's in it for you??

The family and children chosen to be our new reps will receive a free full session, personalized rep cards to pass out to friends and families, all watermarked images from your session to use on blogs, Facebook, email etc, and some other fun goodies. In addition, for each referal you will recieve a $25 print credit!

The family or child chosen must....

-be a promoter for NMP, share share share, tell your friends and family about your session experience, invite them to come check out our website, encourage them to think of us for their next photo session

Free Custom Storyboards!!

Three weeks have flown by since my baby boy was born and as I look at the calendar I realize that it will only be a blink of an eye I will be back to shooting in March! And to ring in the new year, I have decided to offer FREE custom 10x20 storyboard for 5 clients only who schedule a session in March or April! These storyboards are custom designed with your favorite images and you have an unlimited amount of backgrounds and styles to choose from! They are mounted and ready for shelf display or framing. Retail cost is $110.

To snatch up one of these specials, you must be scheduling a new session in March or April. Family, engagement and newborn sessions qualify. Session fees must be paid within 3 days either by a mailed check or paypal.

Yes yes, I am currently on maternity leave, but when my very good friend asked if I would be able to photograph her sweet baby, I couldn't say no! She is, after all, going to be Preston's girlfriend :) The babies were born 13 days apart. If you have been following my facebook fan page or the blog, you know that we were expecting a new little addition to the Metcalf family! On December 9th at 9:26 am, Preston Davis Metcalf was born :) We are enjoying our sweet baby boy and are taking time off to adjust to our new family of five!

I also want to give a shout out to Lerin, she has an amazing talent in birth photography and is available in the Katy, TX area. She is currently looking for a few portfolio models for women due in January or February. Having had c-sections with all of my children, I didn't get to experience birth the way most women do. I didn't get to hold my children right away, I was very foggy and don't remember a lot of the details. With this birth, I had the unique opportunity to have a photographer present and an AMAZING OB who encouraged her to get as many of the up close and personal shots as she wanted. I just can't say enough about how glad I was to have her be a part of our special day! If you, or someone you know is having a baby, contact her! You won't regret it! :)

You may remember this amazingly gorgeous couple from their engagement portraits we did in the Spring. I also had the privilege of doing Allison's bridal portraits featured here. I have been anxiously awaiting their big day as I knew that it would be an amazing day filled with amazing photographs and memories.

We headed to Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs, TX on November 6th. It was a bit chilly in Hill Country but it was all made up for with the beautiful lighting and scenery. And yes, I said we - this large event required quite the entourage that I simply could NOT have done this with out (being 8 1/2 months pregnant and all!) My wonderful husband, David was a key player as he lugged around my bags, equipment, uploaded images, and didn't once complain about the freezing outdoor reception, in addition to my bag man, Tyler, Nichole, and Amanda were amazing assistants helping me cover all the different angles and by sparing me and my unborn child from falling off of tables and chairs! You guys were amazing and I couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you Matt and Alli for inviting me to come along on your spectacular affair!! I just can't wait until our Mr and Mrs Session!

While getting information about our mini-sessions or full sessions, I've had clients ask if I am open for any additional OUTDOOR sessions before the end of the year. Many of you may know, but in case you don't, I am due with our third child on December 10th and will be on maternity leave from Dec 1-Feb 28th. I wasn't planning on adding any additional sessions besides our in house Christmas Mini Sessions, but I just can't leave clients unhappy!! :)

So, for ONE DAY ONLY, I am opening some ON-LOCATION OUTDOOR Mini sessions on Friday, November 12 from 4:30 pm until dusk. Sessions will take place in Downtown Richmond (featured in this post).

The session will include 15 minutes of shooting time, 3 digital images with print release, and can be used for children, family, couples, seniors etc. The cost is $89 and the fee must be paid at the time of booking.

I am going to combine a few posts here to not overwhelm my Facebook followers with my blog feed!!!

First up, we have a commerical shoot for Apron Envy! Polly, the owner, and I met last year when doing some headshots for her website. She since then has expanded her business to offer both child aprons and also a variety of infant products! Be sure to follow her on Facebook!

Thanks to my awesome friend Chantal and my beautiful daughter P, for modeling for me!!

Next we have Debra and Sonny - I was contacted by them a week before their Friday afternoon house wedding and luckily, I don't typically schedule sessions on Fridays so I was available this day! It was an intimate affair with close family and friends! I enjoyed meeting everyone and working for you on this most fabulous day!

Next up we have the "D" family girls. If you go through my blog you will see them appear lots and lots of times. Their mama April sure loves pictures which is great, because I sure love photographing her kiddos!! Little Baby S turned one this month and we celebrated with a cake smash! She first came to us when we did some newborn/family portraits last year! I can't believe shes one already!

Now... remember my gorgeous friend that modeled for me with Apron Envy above? Well...she just so happens to be a photographer too :) She needed some new headshots so we headed out and took some....its so fun working with friends!

One more set of adorable girls that I started when the littlest was really little...actually still in her mommy's tummy! I love seeing these little kiddos grow up, one of the best parts of my job! We did a mini Halloween session - aren't they so cute??

Halloween Mini Sessions! One day only!!!

Halloween is almost here! You can see it in the stores and maybe you've started planning your little ghost or ghoul's costume! So gather your goblins and head out to Katy Heritage Park for some fun Halloween mini sessions on Tuesday, October 11th.

Sessions are $50 and will include a 10 minute session for one child (additional children can be added for $10 and will add on 5 minutes). You can also book two back to back sessions for your children and purchase the second session for $30 - we will still get shots of them together.

This package will include FIVE high res edited digital images with print release along with a digital card with your child's picture for you to print or email!

This soccer loving guy and I cruzed around Downtown Richmond for his senior pictures....and it was HOT - it is Texas and the summer right? Well I guess its to be expected! Well we had a great time and I thought this was fun because he gets to choose any image he wants for the yearbook. Here in Texas they typically assign a local studio to do headshots of the kids in all the same shirts. This is different from where I grew up in MI but this awesome private school acutally lets the kids choose their own! Way to go for individuallity! :)

Some of my clients have probably noticed my growing midsection or seen posts on facebook, so you may know we are expecting baby number 3 in December :) We are excited to add a second little boy to our clan!

Due to this monumental time in our lives, Nena Metcalf Photography will be closing December 1st. I will be available via email but will not be scheduling sessions until Feb or March depending on how the baby and I are doing.

To give you an oversight for the rest of the year, I do have some available sessions in September, and I have October 3rd available. In addition to these dates, we have openings for our Christmas Mini Sessions on just about every date listed.

Thank you so much for making the first year of Nena Metcalf Photography so successful and so darn FUN! Its amazing to think that I started shooting my first non-family clients August of last year. It has been quite a fun journey learning wonderful and sometimes hard lessons but growing as a person, business woman and photographer has been great! Christmas Mini-session dates now available! What... Christmas?!?!? Hey, if Hobby Lobby has trees out, I can start talking about sessions! Sessions will be held in studio in a specially designed Christmas set. I promise the set will not feature a cheesy fake fireplace, it will be custom and classy! (The banner is inspired from our theme...just a little sneak peek!)

Sessions will be 20 minutes and will be scheduled 30 minutes apart. The cost is $60 and includes the session and 3 digital images of your choice (normal mini sessions with 3 images are $100!) We will also have discounted packages available to add on.

Prepay by August 30th and get two additional digital images!

FAQ's:

What is Boudoir?
Boudoir is a french term that means 'bedroom' (pronounced 'boo-dwa'). A bedroom is normally the number one intimate spot to take these types of images in. In this case we will be in an amazing space at a boutique hotel featuring an amazing bed but also many other fantastic spots. I have full intention of taking advantage of every appealing detail from the bed to the spa.

What is a Boudoir Marathon?
A marathon is a day where multiple sessions are scheduled. This way we can have an awesome location and a cheaper price for you! We have 4 sessions allowed for this day! With enough interest, a second day will be scheduled and announced.

Who gets Boudoir pictures done??
Anyone! Boudoir is becoming more and more popular. Lots of women like to get them done for the men in their lives. Whether its a birthday, holiday, wedding gift, or anniversary or 'just to make you smile' gift! I strongly encourage anyone to participate in a boudoir session for themselves, as a boost of self confidence. Any size, shape, color, remember that you are fabulous!

How private will my boudoir session be?
During the shoot it is you, me, the camera and the make-up artist. You're welcome to bring one friend, but space does not allow more.

What if I am uncomfortable with my body, and do your retouch?
First of all, you are beautiful. Secondly, my job is to emphasize the positives and to minimize the areas you feel are less than perfect. When necessary, I do retouch images. Before your session, we will have a complimentary consultation where you'll tell me what areas you are more confident with and what areas you are less than comfortable with. If you have question or concerns about retouching let me know.

Do you supply clothing or what should I bring?
No, I do not supply clothing. I'm going to bring a few accessories, but the rest is on you! One thing I want to make sure people are not confused about is that this is not the 80-90's version of boudoir. This is classy, modern, sexy, fun, and beautiful boudoir. You should bring 3-4 outfits..

Popular choices are:
lingerie, baby doll dresses, chemise, corsets, garters, thigh highs, fishnets, sports jerseys, men's dress shirts and ties, bra/panty sets, thongs/g-strings/sexy boy shorts, heels and fun jewelry.

These are just examples.. bring whatever you want to wear, but please try them on before your session. We want these images to represent YOU and whatever makes YOU comfortable. One thing I do encourage is to stay away from busy patterns. Solid colors are more flattering...but feel free to have fun with the color!

Do you do nude photography?
These Boutique Boudoir sessions normally would be "implied nude" at most.. but if you are interested in being nude in your images, just let me know ahead of your session.

Through some major miracles he is a healthy, strong, beautiful baby boy and we celebrated his 1st "birthday" with a cake smash (1 year from his due date). I do have to say, I have never seen a child leave a cake smash with his face squeaky clean, however, the same couldn't be said for his legs and feet!

Thanks guys for choosing me to celebrate Grayson's milestone!! Can't wait to watch him grow!

The M Family desperately needed some updated family portraits. While youngest sis was in town from NYC it was time to get together to shoot. They brought me a copy of their last family portrait, taken about 15 years ago in some stuffy studio. The "kids" in this family where then adorned with braces, glasses, bad hairdos and less than stylish outfits. I think we were able to capture some new family memories for this group that reflect who they are today!

Lucy was the lucky winner of our first Cutest Child Contest, and boy does she fit the bill!!! We headed out a sunny morning to capture some shots for her first birthday. Here are some of my favs!
